According to an October 2010 nationwide "Kids are Alright" survey by internet privacy company Truste - parents are monitoring what their kids are doing online.
Out of the 1,000 parents included in the survey, 72% said they monitored their kids' activity online, 10% of parents admitted they secretly logged in to their kids' Facebook accounts and 86% of parents are Facebook friends with their teens.
Only 86% hunh? Personally, I'm shocked that number isn't higher especially since according to a sexting survey by the National Coalition to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy - 39% of all teens have admitted to sending or posting sexually suggestive messages. Yup...39% parents!
Some other key findings of the Kids are Alright survey were:
- 80% of parents and 78% of teens feel in control of their personal information on social networking sites
- 84% of parents are confident their teen is responsible with personal information on a social networking site
- 72% of parents surveyed monitor their teens’ accounts, with 50% of these parents monitoring weekly, 35% daily and 10% monthly
- 84% of parents are accurate in understanding the amount of time their teen spends on social networks and generally have a good understanding of the activities they are engaged in online
- 18% of teens have been embarrassed or disciplined as a result of a posting
- 80% of teens use privacy settings at some point to hide content from certain friends and/or parents
- 68% of teens surveyed have at some time accepted friend invites from people they don’t know, with 8% accepting all, 34% accepting some, and 26% accepting rarely
