Most believe marriage to be an equal partnership. Mixing in two parts career can certainly complicate matters. A recent New York Times article delves into the marriage of Michelle and Barack Obama, and discusses how they balance a common challenge couples face: the competing demands of spouses’ careers.
Careers can complicate much more than how dinner is getting on the table tonight. Sometimes life changing decisions are financially based – go where the breadwinner’s job takes both (or all) of us. It’s important to be supportive of your spouse, but does that mean even if it’s at the expense of one’s own career ambitions? It can be a difficult place to be, but if you’re with the right person, I believe you chose a path together…and go with all your heart. I tend to think the Obama’s are doing just that, and quite well.
