Organize Your Finances

In an article by Peter Walsh on Oprah.com, Organize Your Finances, he shares some easy tips to get your life in order. At least, your financial life.  I have so much trouble with this.  I never want to open all of my mail, I don't want to take the time to file everything away and I feel like it's going to consume my thoughts if I'm constantly worrying about where my paperwork is. In reality, Pete says "The better organized you are about your finances, the less you have to think about money, the more time you have to live your life. And that's what it's all about."  So, I guess it's partly that I don't want to grow up and have a file cabinet with bills and insurance and 401k stuff in it but also that, well...I'm just not the best organizer.  But if these quick tips will help me out when I need to go to the doctor and can't find my recent records, or remind me how much I payed on my last electric bill, then I guess it's time to grow up and realize the financial fairy (aka my mom) won't be magically organizing these things for me anymore. Not that she has in a long time, I think I was just holding on the the hope that somehow, some way, it might get done without me.

I admit, I'm not the most organized or dilligent file keeper either, and I'm also guilty of not opening mail. I just don't want to face it. (But I'm super dilligent about tracking my tax stuff.)  I like Walsh's suggestion about taking 20 minutes on a regular basis to face down this uncomfortable task. Dividing it into small doses makes it more doable. I also reward myself. If I've accomplished a really major task like sorting out some tangled financial issue, I treat myself to a bike ride on the beach or watching a movie. It helps me to continue to stick with a task I don't like but that will never ever go away.
