Government says eat less, exercise more to combat obesity

Yesterday, the US Government released its 2010 Dietary Guidelines.  And for the first time in its seven-year history, the number one recommendation was to eat less and exercise more.  Now that may sound like a no brainer, but coming from a government heavily influenced by food and meat industry lobbyists, the suggestion to consume less of their products was a step in the right direction.  But has it come too late?

One-third of children and two-thirds of adults in America are either overweight or obese.  The combination of a more sedentary lifestyle and the over abundance of fast food served in large portions has resulted in a population addicted to salt, sugar and processed foods.  To suggest that we all of a sudden cut back, cut out and get out and work out because the government said so is a bit absurd.  I hate to say it, but it is going to take a combination of factors to create change.  And the first one is personal.

People have to want to change before they will ever listen to how to change.  For some, it takes a health crisis.  For others, it takes an act of love--an impending wedding or the desire to see a child or grandchild grow up.  For yet others, it represents the ultimate challenge--a sign they can tackle anything and succeed.  But it always takes an act of will.

Does America have the will to change?  Do you?  Let me encourage you to start today, making one small change.  Maybe it is something as simple as replacing a soda with a glass of water.  Maybe it is eating a piece of fruit in addition to whatever else you had planned.  Maybe you take the stairs at work.  Or maybe you stand and walk as you talk on your cell phone to your girlfriend or mom instead of sitting on the couch.  Whatever you do, and wherever you are, start there and don't give up.

Because I so love freaking everyone out when I tell this story - here goes...Many years ago my grandmother installed one of those soda guns that you see in a bar in her house.  Thing is - for the diet soda - she had to have special tubing installed because...here it comes...the diet soda was EATING THROUGH the regular plastic tubing.

If diet soda eats through regular ole plastic tubing - what pray tell is it doing to your stomach?  I've always been an advocate of you are what you eat.  And if you put junk in your body...
