Medical research makes strides in understanding women

Nearly 3 months ago today, I wrote a blog post about the disparity in research studies conducted with men and women in the scientific arena.  I cited a study on the effects of fuel on post-workout bodies that completely ignored women until they pleaded with the professor to study them.  The results surprised the professor but probably not the women who knew they were different than men and needed something different to fuel their bodies.

Today, I have good news to report.  We are making progress.  At least according to a new study out from the US Department of Health and Human Services which finds that research into some of the most serious health threats to women (breast cancer, cervical cancer and heart disease) has helped reduce the effects of the disease.  Progress has also been made in the areas of depression, osteoporosis and HIV/Aids.

Now the bad news.  We aren't progressing as far on diseases and conditions that impact our quality of life--things like alcohol and drug addition, unintended pregnancy and dementia.  And we also aren't making much progress at looking a layer deeper at other demographic and psychographic differences among women that could make a real difference in treatment protocols.

The report goes on support the slow realization among researchers that men and women ARE different and respond differently to treatment.  As such, they need to be studied indpendently and results reported indpendently.

What can an every day Jane like me and you do?  Agree to participate in quality research initiatives that will deepen the understanding of women's health issues.  Ask your doctor what you can do to get drug companies to include more women in studies.  Go direct to the pharma companies and tell them what you think.  We are Jane Nation will work to find brands interested in what Jane has to say and give you those opportunities to let your voice be heard.  If you have any brands or issues you feel most passionate about, let us know.
