ThredUp offers great alternative to BTS clothes shopping

While in NY recently for the BlogHer conference, I signed a Green School Year Pledge at the thredUp booth.  I agreed to purchase a reusable drink container for use instead of  juice boxes.  I'm pleased to report my daughter used used such a container this am.  There were other suggestions such as purchasing reusable sandwich and snack containers, using school supplies made of recyclable material and one close to the company sponsors heart:  swapping gently used clothing for the next size up.

thredUp (yep, that's how they spell it), is a great new concept started out of Cambridge, MA by some really smart Harvard types who partnered with some even smarter moms to create an online business that lets families swap clothes with each other instead of constantly buying new ones.  The premise is simple.  Pack a box.  Let people know what gender, size and season it is for and ship it when someone requests it. Then, select a box for your child.  Earn credits and kudos for shipping speed and clothing quality/variety.

Check them out at thredup.com.  And let us know what else you are doing to have an eco-friendly (aka economically and environmentally friendly) school year.

Fantastic idea ... I'm sure users have to be realistic about setting expectations (you may not always get a fully equitable swap), but at least taking heart in the fact that you're contributing to cycle of lower consumption ... which is a good thing.
