Are you "swapping" this season?

A few years ago the adults in my family decided to stop "swapping" money at Christmas buying each other gifts we either couldn't afford to give or may not want to get.  Perhaps we should have considered another type of "swap"--the kind growing in popularity given recessionary conditions--swapping things we have but don't want for things others feel the same way about.

Several articles have been published this year about the rise in swapping, but the one that caught my eye today was about a new program from SunTrust banks...yes a bank...called "Swap a Solid".  And while I don't love the name, I do love the premise behind the Facebook application that enables members to swap any goods or services.  It is part of the organization's "Live Solid" campaign that celebrates consumer shift toward a more sustainable economic footprint that limits risk and exposure and maximizes enjoyment.

What about you?  Have you participated in any swaps this year?  Are you considering it this holiday season?

Many of our neighbors do this on a regular basis. I am in the clean out the clutter mode, so I am happy to give away items that are needed by others that my family no longer needs. At the beginning of the school year we moved our boys into one room and into bunk beds. We had a queen bed frame, mattress and all that had only been used by my 8 year old for a few years, rather than store in the garage where it might not keep well we donated to a family through our church that had suffered many losses through a house fire.

Very cool idea. I have tons of junk I would love to swap for a new house! Any takers?

I LOVE this idea!  I am a big fan of use, reuse, then use it up!  I use consignment shops for clothes I don't want (or are too big now!) and enjoy finding new recipes for leftovers.  I would like to think that our great-great-great-great grandmothers would be proud of us!
