Just 8 months into his presidency and only the third sitting president to win, President Obama was announced as the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize this morning. The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Obama for this honor because of his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
Because nominations had to be received in February, it was a surprise to many that the president would be considered for the prize after only 12 days in office. However, the decision was unanimous among the five voting committee members and they stand strong behind their award. President Obama will not only receive this incredible honor but the $1.4 million prize that is given to every Nobel Prize winner.
He spoke this morning at 11a.m. from the Rose Garden at the White House to remark on receiving the prize. He was extremely humble in his acceptance of the award and said "To be honest, I don't feel as though I deserve it, but I will accept this award as a call to action." He promised to use the prize as motivation to keep up his efforts across the nation, and certainly across the world. He touched on his work towards reducing worldwide nuclear threats, improving peace relations among the diverse peoples of the world, ending the global economic crisis and working towards a safer, cleaner environment to leave for the generations to follow.
Reporters tried to ask the President questions after his address but he did not stay to answer. If you could ask President Obama anything about winning the prize, what would it be? Are you in full support of his winning the Nobel Peace Prize or did another nominee deserve it more?
