Several years ago I experienced a sudden acceleration in my car that was the result of a floor mat that had shifted out of place and caught on the gas pedal. Fortunately, I was on a stretch of road where there were no other cars. I simply reached down, grabbed the mat and pulled as hard as I could while applying the brakes. It worked and I slowed to a manageable pace.
A San Diego Lexus driver was not as lucky last month. His sudden acceleration problem resulted in four deaths, including the driver. This tragedy precipitated a safety directive from Toyota and Lexus to drivers of nearly 4 million of their models. The message: Remove the mats.
On their website, Toytota/Lexus admit they don't have an immediate solution that would necessitate a recall. Truth is, this is a problem that has plagued other car manufactuers like Audi in the 90s (that was the vehicle I had my problem with). You would think someone in the automotive space would come up with a solution that removes this potential hazard. Any ideas, Janes?
