I heard a radio interview with twins Alex and Brett Harris, authors of "Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations," and was blown away by their challenge to young people not to coast their way through adolescence, but to use it as a time to grow up by giving back In fact, they have started a movement called a "rebeloution" to empower and inspire young people to "find a cause greater than their fear." They have a web site, a nationwide tour, multiple articles and talk show appearances, and a passion to change the world that can't be quenched by doubters. A quick scan of their articles and topics reveals a very well researched and considered approach to youth culture. Young and old can learn a great deal from them.
It got me to thinking, are we doing hard things as adults right now, or are we hunkered down just holding on until this tsunami of economic and political change levels out? Are we pushing ourselves to venture outside our comfort zone or are we searching for more more comfort right where we are?
We've started a new Sisterhood entitled, "Reinventing at any age" to explore what women think, feel and do when they find themselves faced with either a milestone birthday or event that causes them to ask, "Who am I?" and as important, "Who do I want to be?" In some ways, those questions are the first step toward "doing hard things" in our lives whether it be shedding a bad habit or attitude or adopting a new mindset or mission.
What "hard things" are you working on in your life? What "hard things" can we Janes tackle together?
