Multitasking is not something we should brag about anymore

For as long as we've been on the planet we Janes have prided ourselves on our ability to do several things at once...and all quite well, thank you very much.  As if personal pride weren't enough, we also liked to poke fun at the non-multitasking men in our lives.  Well, stop the bragging and the multitasking mania.  Turns out, its bad for our brains.

A new study out from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that people who engage in multitasking are not really as efficient as they think they are.  They also do not learn as well and may actually experience a 10 point drop in their IQ.  Furthermore, in order for the brain to try and process all that we are throwing at it at once the body has to release extra chemicals and hormones.  Over time, this can result in increased anxiety, anger and potentially autistic tendencies.  Wow!

I have to admit, I don't multitask as well as I used to, and it frustrated me.  So I decided a few months ago to do a better job at focusing and finishing.  I tell my daughter this all the time.  Focus. Focus. Focus.  It has literally saved her from having to do lots of studying for tests because she focuses on the content in class and really tries to understand it.  I guess its time for me to take my own advice.

Multi-tasking can easily creep into psycho-busy!  And then you have to be careful at how lonely you might be because you're just so busy!  Step back, take a breath...enjoy and let others enjoy YOU...not what you do how many things you do!

My husband told me about this study because I always tease him about not being able to multitask. I guess I need to stop worrying about doing many things at once and start focusing on each task more.
