Friendship celebrated in August

One of the down sides of digital calendars is the loss of all those fun little holiday reminders like National Watermelon Day (today), Wiggle Your Toes Day (August 6), National Relaxation Day (August 15), Kiss & Make Up Day (August 25) and National Toasted Marshmallow Day (August 30).  And that's just the tip of the iceberg.  Who knew that in August are 7 month long observances, 6 week long ones, and 72 daily holidays. I certainly didn't.

One of the more interesting and important ones to Jane Nation are the celebrations of friendship that happen in August.  In fact, National Friendship Day was yesterday.  Congress passed legislation making the first Sunday in August an annual celebration of friendship back in 1935.  Since then, the world has adopted this day of celebration.

Women have their own day to celebrate friendship on the third Sunday in August (that falls on August 16th this year, which also happens to be National Roller Coaster Day).  And anyone can and should do something kind for someone, friend or stranger on August 22, Be An Angel Day.

While these holidays are good and fun, truth is we shouldn't need a national holiday to remind us to celebrate the people in our lives, male and female, who make the journey a little lighter and brighter.  Every day is a chance to tell someone you appreciate them, care about them and are there for them no matter what.

So, on behalf of all of us at Jane Nation, let me extend to all of you our sincerest thanks for being friends with us.
