What's new in your pantry?

Apparently, not enough.  According to a study just out from Ipsos Marketing, nearly 90% of shoppers want to try a new food or beverage item, yet only 26% believe the category is very innovative.

I don't know about you but I find that second statistic strikingly low.  So I thought I'd take a quick poll of my own, and asked some of my family who I am visiting with this week what food/beverage innovations they could think of.  WIthout missing a beat we made quite a list.  We included such items as salad spritzers, portion-controlled snack packs, ready-to-eat veggies and fruits in single serve packs, lower calorie sports drinks, flavored mixes for water, new grip plastic cups, smaller size soda cans, scoop-shaped chips and combination fruit/vegetable drinks, to name a few.

One thing we noticed was that many had to do with packaging innovations which while adding convenience, also added cost and in some cases chemical preservatives.  We also noticed that several of the ones we mentioned involved portion control.   Of course we were all women answering the question, and half of us are over age 40 so we are concerned about maintaining our weight/health and taking care of our kids.  My younger niece commented that she was trying to get back to basics and shopping the outer rim of the grocery store where the healthier, fresher items existed.  She wondered aloud why there weren't more innovations in this area?  Was portion control really necessary?  Couldn't we all portion out the proper amounts in our own reusable serving items?  Ah, the wisdom of youth.

What do you find innovative in your pantry these days?  Do you think the industry is doing enough to make healthy eating easier and more affordable for everyone?  Should that be their focus?

I've always tried to eat healthy, but after suffering a knee injury and then surgery w/rehab, well the days of high impact workouts were over for me. I became much more aware of not only how much I was eating, but exactly what I was eating. My new focus on healthy has converted our entire family and we make cooking a family affair. It's a nice trade off of more family time in place of convenience of prepackaged food. Still have the occasional can of Chef Bouardee stashed in the pantry for a quick fix, but mostly whole grain cereals, assortment of fat-free instant jello and pudding mixes, 5 minute steel cut irish oatmeal, extra virgina olive oil, and whole grain pastas with omega 3's line the shelves. We buy as much fresh fruit and vegetables as we can, but small portions of dried fruit are a nice snack to slip into the kids lunch.

My pantry is full, but to be honest, I do not buy a ton of packaged goods - except canned soups, beans and condiments. I try not to buy "ready to eat" items even if they are portion controlled because I have a hard time controlling myself - I definitely tend to over eat. If I am hungry at home, it's either fruit or I have to cook it (we don't have a microwave either).  I'm not the absolute healthiest person in the world (I think there should be balance), but I do pay attention to things like MSG which is in almost every packaged good - even in some of the portion controlled items. Healthy to me is all about eating real food. I don't always practice what I preach, but I try.

My favorite are the single serve portions - in addition to being easy and convenient (especially when I'm packing my lunch for work), it really helps with portion control. I tend to be an over-eater when food is in front of me, so the single servings really help with that. I also love pre-cut vegetables and fruit as well and the bagged lettuce ... it helps save time for weeknight dinners...though I do feel like the price for this convenience is pretty steep. When I have the time, I will definitely always buy whole vegetables and fruit and prepare it myself.

I definitely believe that health should be a focus for the industry. Obesity and over indulgence is a huge problem, so I think it is important for the food industry to help people make healthier choices.
