Two-thirds of us feel financially independent

A new survey out from Synovate says that 64% of women in the US feel "financially independent."  When probed for greater definition, the answers were mixed.  For some, it is about not being dependent on a partner or spouse.  For others it is about living debt free.  Fewer say it is being able to afford what they want without worrying about the cost.

The international study found that women inf France, England and South Africa report the highest levels of financial independence.  French and British women equate independence to not having to rely on anyone else.

Do you feel financially independent?  Whether you do or don't, how would you define it?

Financially independent to me means that you live without worrying about money. It means having money in the bank for retirement, emergencies, vacations, holidays and whatever else that may come up.

I define 'financially independent' as being able to 'survive' on my own -- without the help of my husband.  It's what makes our generation so different than our Mothers'.  We don't necessarily 'need' our spouses...we have to 'want' them.  I'm trying to reach the next level of fiancial freedom which I define as 'able to give'.  I want to live more frugal so that I can give to 'causes' along the way in life and right now I find that challenging to my wallet.
