Treat Dad and the gang at A&W this weekend

I distinctly remember how excited I got as a kid when I would peek inside the grocery sack (they were always brown paper then) and see my mom had purchased root beer and vanilla ice cream.  It was often on a Friday when we would be having friends over that evening for game night.  She knew how much my dad, brother and I loved root beer floats.  It was like a neat science experiment you got to eat.  I loved watching the foam bubble up as we stirred the yummy ice cream into the root beer.  Frosty mugs made it even more fun...and more grown-up like.

Tomorrow (Friday, June 19), A&W begins celebrating its 90th birthday with free floats for everyone between 2 - 8 p.m.  Then on Sunday they are offering dads $.90 hamburgers.  To find a location near you, check out the A&W website.  What a great way to start and end your Father's Day weekend!

I remember the bubble mustache I'd get if I drank from the glass rather than through the straw. We lived in Clinton, Indiana and my dad would take us to the A&W drive-in on special occassions. My dad is gone, but I can still remember him laughing at my A&W mustache. Now, my son and I will "sneak" out on a midnight "date" run to Wal-Mart and buy diet A&W and "no sugar added" ice cream to make a float that doesn't send us into sugar dives. The flavor is still unbeatable and I know we are making memories that will last forever...for both of us.

I think Root Beer floats are a memory trigger for almost everyone's childhood.  My uncle used to make them for me when we would spend the 4th of July week down at the beach in St. Augustine.  I used to think it was the ultimate treat! and I won't lie...I still love them.
