A new study out from the NPD Group reports that online sales of cosmetic purchases are up slightly, with the average annual amount spent at $86. The report goes on to say that women are not only buying more cosmetics but also buying more expensive brands. Another study from Mintel reports that cosmetic spend will continue to trend upward over the next years, with a 10% increase being forecast.
I find this interesting on a couple of levels. First of all, I've never purchased cosmetics online. I guess I'm old school when it comes to wanting to see it, touch it, try it on. I also admit I'm not very loyal to any one brand so I buy whatever is on sale or has a special offer. Secondly, I do think it is interesting that women are still spending a little something on themselves that makes them look and feel good. We all know that we aren't buying as many clothes. Instead, we are trying to rework what we have have in our closet or update our look with inexpensive jewelry or accessories. Historically, recessionary times yield higher cosmetic sales, particularly lipstick.
Is this true for you? Have you bought cosmetics online? What about a new lipstick color?
