Why can't 40 be 40 instead of the new 20?

Valeriepeople First of all, let me congratulate Valerie Bertinelli for turning her life around inside and out. I'm proud of her 50 pound weight loss--regardless of her age.

What frustrates me is the media flurry it set off (per usual) about why 40 is the new 20, or that its hotter than 20. Why do we need a frame of reference like that at all? Why can't we be recognized for who we are without any comparison?

I agree with what Lesley Jane Seymour, editor of More Magazine and Carol Alt, a model who is in her 40s told Meredith Vieira on The Today Show, that women are really coming into and "owning their age." If that's true, let's stop adding any age-related reference points to our achievements.

I wish being 45 wasn't so much harder than being 40! Not sure how 5 years could've been so exhausting!

Personally, I love 40 being the new 20. That makes my 50 the new 30...and frankly most days that is really how I feel.

I think it scares our society to NOT think in numbers.

If my house costs more than yours -society tells me I should be happier. If my bod looks better than yours - society tells me I'm OK because I haven't lost "it" - whatever "it" is.

When I saw the mag cover of Ms. Bertinelli, I thought, "that's great and I wonder how much airbrushing was done." I think I'm becoming cynical when pictures point to the best bods. I'm just glad the paparazzi aren't interested in me!
