It is estimated that nearly 14 million young adults between the ages of 19 - 29 lack health insurance. Many of them had been covered by their parents health plan until being dropped due to age limits for dependents. But that is starting to change.
Legislation increasing the age of dependent coverage has been passed in more than 20 states, including my home state of Florida. The age of coverage varies by state, with some capping at 24 and others going as high as age 30. Florida elected to extend coverage to the highest end of that range.
Florida parents have until April 1 to get their eligible dependents enrolled with coverage. Be sure and check with your employer for details. And to learn more about what states offer extended coverage, check out the Common Wealth Fund web site.
