While I don't relish the idea of giving up an hour of sleep, I do love the fact that we got to "spring forward" this weekend. And where I live it was warm enough to be outside all weekend wearing flip flops and shorts. In fact, lots of people were in shorts, including my daughter and her friends.
Fortunately for me, my daughter loves the longer style Bermuda short. But driving through the neighborhood I could tell not every young girl has the same preference. Nor do her parents.
What happened to modesty?
According to an article in the USA Today, it is making a comeback. And just in time, too. Seems that tough economic times call for more restraint not only in what we spend but also what we wear. And that's good news for the nation's growing population of aging Xers and Boomers who really don't need to be in spaghetti strap tank tops and Daisy Duke shorts. As the mom of a Tween, I would also argue that restraint is good for them, too. They don't need to be showing their midriffs or their backsides either.
Apparently, I'm not alone. A couple of young girls organizations like Pure Fashion and Secret Keeper Girl are striving to educate young girls and the designers and retailers who sell to them about the merits of dressing fashionably modest. "Modest doesn't have to mean dowdy," says one girl in the USA Today video about Pure Fashion. And judging from the clothing shown on their web site from a fashion show they held in Atlanta, she is absolutely right. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to participate.
