To tip or not to tip? You tell us!

You call your favorite restaurant, place an order for pick-up, and run to get it 20 minutes later.  You hurry inside, grab your food, and go to pay the bill, and there it is. The tip line on the receipt.  If you're like a lot of Janes, you're left wondering...."Am I supposed to leave something?  They just put my food in a bag right?  They didn't spend an hour asking me if I was okay and refilling my wine glass.  But, someone did have to put it all together.  And, do they not get tips just because they have to work the take out counter?"

So, we want to know what you do.  Do you draw a line through the space and leave the total, give them a little less than if you dined in, or give them the same amount you would give any waiter?  Help us be less confused when it comes to take-out tipping!

I still leave a tip even when ordering take out. The tip is based on how good of a job they did when taking my order, if they got it right, and also if they are polite when I go to pick it up. IF I happen to be using a gift card then they usually get a little more of a tip anyway just because...

I usually leave something, but definitely not as much as I would dining in.  I do think it's a little silly that we pay extra for someone to put our food in a box and hand it to us, but then again I realize they are getting paid next to nothing and almost everything they make comes from tips.  Maybe this should be something we take up with restaurants!

Well, a tip is "To Insure Prompt Service" so I guess I would apply that to dining in. I'm not sure I would tip 15% for take-out. I'm a great tipper but I do think we tip A LOT in America.

When I was a server in college, my biggest annoyance was when I took the time to place an order (esp. if they took forever to make a decision), boxed it up, and handled the payment for the customer with a friendly attitude BUT didn't get anything in return. Because the server has spent some time with you, he/she deserves some sort of compensation. I don't think servers should receive the full 20-25% since it's not the full dining experience, but at least 10% is good.
